MARILYN HAGERTY: Racing in Grand Forks began with flatboats on Red

It wouldn’t seem like summer in Grand Forks without the whirring sounds from River Cities Speedway on Friday evenings. And the history kept by Jim Corcoran goes way back to George Winship, founder of the Herald. The editor once wrote that this city owes its existence to a flatboat race down the Red River in the fall of 1870.
