MIDWAY SCHOOL: At the head of the class

Midway Public School in Inkster, N.D., is generally considered the first major school district consolidation in North Dakota history, in that it combined junior and senior high school students from nearly a half-dozen communities and the surrounding countryside. Its first class of 26 seniors graduated in spring 1962. Back then, it was one of the largest school districts in the state, said Superintendent Roger Abbe. Now, it's about average.Word count: 1378
