MARILYN HAGERTY: ‘No baseball on Sundays,’ said ministers in 1912

The cry, “Play ball,” went out in Grand Forks in May 1912. The Grand Forks Flickertails received a warm welcome from fans on opening day, May 20. They were playing the Duluth White Sox in the Central International Baseball League. Mayor Murphy, who threw out the first pitch, said the day should be a holiday with the afternoon given over to baseball.
