Joe Trainor Sr. had administrative duties at the White House he needed to catch up on and won a coin toss with Special Agent Timothy McCarthy on March 30, 1981. Trainor stayed at the White House, manning the Secret Service communications command post, and McCarthy was shot protecting the president.
