Critics think more could have been done to save Fighting Sioux nickname
Grant Shaft stood before a committee of the North Dakota House of Representatives in Bismarck, in one of the Capitol’s largest meeting rooms. The room was packed. He was there, Shaft told members of the House Education Committee 11 days ago, on behalf of the State Board of Higher Education, not to support or oppose bills concerning UND’s Fighting Sioux nickname, but to explain the board’s efforts to resolve the long contentious issue.
