Political candidates who spent the past year or more wooing voters stepped to the sidelines today with little left to do but to wait for returns. With races for governor, Congress, the Legislature and local offices on the ballot — plus an electorate widely viewed as angry about the economy — election officials projected higher-than-normal turnout of about 60 percent.Word count: 556
