Facing up to a fatal accident

Published 09/25/2010, Newsday

In 1988, New York high school senior Darin Strauss accidentally hit a classmate when her bicycle swerved in front of his car. She was killed, and he was sued by her parents for millions of dollars. Strauss, who went on to publish three novels, including 2008’s “More Than It Hurts You,” has now written “Half a Life” (McSweeney’s, $22), partly to honor the girl (called “Celine Zilke” here) and partly to understand the person the accident has made him.
