Last year, Ian Rankin retired his surly detective, John Rebus, leaving him hugging the mahogany at his favorite bar in Edinburgh. When Rankin’s “Doors Open” (Little, Brown and Company, 368 pages) crossed my desk, I jumped in immediately. Now, I miss Rebus even more.Word count: 473
