Q AND A: Job application can ask for SSN

After three years with the same company, I was laid off. I am now searching for a new job. Some of the companies I have contacted ask for my Social Security number on their application forms. I am tempted to leave it blank out of concern over identity theft. If I leave the space blank, will this leave a negative impression?
