AUTO Q AND A: When the ride gets scary

Published 08/21/2009, McClatchy-Tribune News Service

Q: I've begun to notice an alarming characteristic on my '97 Suburban. When I'm driving over irregular pavement it sometimes wanders enough to scare me. Also, when I'm hitting bumps at higher speeds it seems to float around as if the tires aren't always squarely on the ground. The tires look good, and are fully inflated, and it has 138,500 miles on the odometer. I'm imagining there's something worn out in the front axle—any ideas what should be checked, and what it might cost to fix?
