ALWAYS IN SEASON: Geese not as free as folklore suggests

Bill and Margie Devlin send good news from Nebraska. “Spring will soon be on the way,” their note said. “There were hundreds of thousands of geese west of Grand Island Thursday getting ready for the trip north.” Grand Island is in the Platte River Valley, a well-used stopover for northbound geese. Most years, it’s pretty close to the southern edge of the continental snow cover. The Platte is also famous for concentrations of sandhill cranes.Word count: 679
