N.D. LEGISLATURE: Crop checkoffs may rise

North Dakota lawmakers are considering bills to increase the “checkoff” farmers pay on barley, sunflower and flax production and continue a portion of the checkoff on wheat that was put in place four years ago to pay for a trade complaint against Canada. Together, the bills would generate an estimated $2.8 million over the next two years. Farmers say it’s needed for crop research.
