Martin Luther King’s flame has always burned brightest in Atlanta, but in a real sense, the torch is being passed to Washington, D.C., with his birthday and holiday taking on dual meaning for many Americans because it falls on the eve of Barack Obama’s inauguration. While Georgia’s capital has traditionally been the place for the most high-profile observance that day, this year it will share the spotlight with the nation’s capital.
