Winter makes icy return to region

Mother Nature kept an icy promise, as a winter storm slammed into the Mitchell area early Sunday.
The sleet and freezing rain that started in the early morning were topped by 6.8 inches of snow by nightfall, according to National Weather Service weather observer Gary Lambert, of Mitchell. It was a wet, heavy snow and, including the ice and freezing rain, .82 of an inch of precipitation was recorded, Lambert said.
