More signatures valid, judge rules

PIERRE — The margin of victory became 737 signatures larger Tuesday for the petitioners seeking a statewide referendum next year on South Dakota’s expanded smoking ban.
Circuit Judge Kathleen Trandahl found they gathered 19,757 valid signatures, or 2,981 more than the minimum of 16,776 necessary. The new total is larger than the 19,020 the judge originally declared valid in her immediate ruling from the bench at the conclusion of a two-day trial in November.
