DOT recipe: Less sand, same salt

Published 10/23/2009, The Daily Republic

PIERRE — The state Department of Transportation plans to stop using sand much of the time this winter, and see whether the same amount of salt alone can do a better job melting ice and snow on South Dakota’s highways.
Under the DOT’s new strategy, sand will still be part of the mix during extreme cold, freezing rain and other situations where vehicles need help with traction. But when the main goal is clearing ice and snow, the DOT’s trucks will be carrying only salt.
