New uses found for old laptops as school moves on

By sharing, sacrifice and some creative planning, the Mitchell School District managed to limp through the final months of a threeyear computer lease on its 1,200 Gateway laptops.
Roughly half, or 600, of the Gateways survived the final lease year in working condition, said Chief Information Officer Dan Muck. The remainder were cannibalized for the replacement parts that became virtually impossible to obtain when an impending bankruptcy caused Gateway MPC to default on service contracts starting in the summer of 2008.
