DOC inmate crews: 33 disaster jobs since ’98

When a Thanksgiving 2005 ice storm wrecked 11,100 power poles and shut down power in many parts of eastern South Dakota, cleanup crews scrambled to secure the area, prevent injuries and restore electricity.
And as those electric company crews mustered as much manpower as they could, assistance showed up in the form of more than 20 minimum-security inmates, wearing bright orange clothing and toting chainsaws.
