Local view: Election defined by two distinct world views

Published 11/02/2008, Duluth News Tribune

We stand on an ideological bridge between the politics of the 20th century and the possibilities of the 21st century. Barack Obama represents the future, John McCain the past. Obama’s face, like Tiger Woods and Halle Berry, mirrors the diversity of the United States. In just a few decades, a white face will be in a minority in this country as the population evolves. But for a number of people, that reality is and has been too difficult to accept. Recognition of our diversity would require an acceptance that the 21st century and beyond will continue to see the unfolding of the American dream for millions of Americans whose skin is not white and whose religion may not be Christian.
