Do it: Build a snow house

Published 01/05/2014, Duluth News Tribune

Here’s something you can do in your backyard with the kids. Shovel a bunch of snow into a circle 15 or 20 feet in diameter. Heap it up a good 6 feet. Let it sit for a few hours or overnight. Hollow it out, using shovels or small scoops. Leave the walls at least 1 foot thick for structural stability. Use a broomstick to poke two or three vent holes in the roof. Make a couple of little shelves in the walls for candles. Put a tarp on the floor. Add pads and sleeping bags. (One bag inside another will be warmer.) Sleep out.
