Our view: Candidates needed for County Board

Published 08/26/2013, Associated Press

Give the St. Louis County Board credit. Before deciding whether to appoint a temporary replacement to fill the seat vacated in July when Commissioner Steve O’Neil died of cancer, the board called for a public hearing. Then it showed it listened to O’Neil’s constituents from eastern Duluth by announcing that no one running to replace O’Neil would be considered to fill his seat on a temporary basis. Picking someone running for the seat would have given that candidate the unfair advantage of name recognition and incumbency, even if only for a few weeks. Commissioners recognized that — and not only heard it repeatedly from the public but based a decision on what they heard.
