Local view: Early postcards provided unique Northland perspectives

Tour most gift shops in Canal Park or along the North Shore and you’ll probably find racks of postcards with familiar subjects: the Aerial Lift Bridge, Split Rock Lighthouse, a gull perched on a rope-wrapped piling and other wish-you-were-here views that promote local tourism. While many early postcards were designed to attract visitors, most went far beyond that to promote the entire Zenith City — even if they weren’t always honest.
