Local view: Duluth-Superior Quakers oppose Gogebic Taconite mine

Concerned about the massive taconite mine proposed for the Penokee Hills south of Ashland, Wis., the Duluth-Superior Friends Meeting sent a delegation of a dozen Quakers to the area on June 1. We stopped to visit the Penokee Hills Education Project in Ashland, drove into the hills around Mellen, Wis., and spent several hours as guests of the Harvest and Education Camp established by the Lac Courte Oreilles Band of Ojibwe.
