Reader’s view: Media deregulation led to mediocre journalism

In 1996, the Telecommunications Act deregulated media ownership, and the market quickly consolidated corporate power’s economic grip. A few conglomerates absorbed thousands of media broadcast stations, and mergers drove out smaller competitors. Half a million jobs were lost, and many talented staff members were replaced with more-profitable automated satellite feeds.
