Subtlety in horror fiction died in 1999, when Stephen King was hit by a van and his fiction was forever altered. Joe Hill has since picked up the proverbial “slack” with his collection “20th Century Ghosts” (2005), and novels “Heart-Shaped Box” (2007) and “Horns” (2010). Hill seemingly started right where King left off, leading readers into the darkest corners of humanity, but without the “in-your-face” shock of other authors.
