Reader's view: Rail service makes economic sense now

Why should the people of northern Minnesota support construction of the proposed Northern Lights Express (NLX) passenger train as soon as possible? First, interest rates are lower than inflation. Second, construction contractors are lowering profit margins to obtain contracts. Third, our trade union workers have high unemployment. Fourth, a northern Minnesota foundry plans to bid on manufacturing the seat frames for NLX passenger trains. Finally, the cost of regular gasoline for Northland drivers is approaching $4 per gallon.
