Great Lakes plover population up a bit, then down

Great Lakes piping plover numbers crashed from an estimated 800 breeding pairs across all five lakes before the 1940s to as few as 12 pairs in the 1980s, all of them in Michigan. They were federally listed as endangered in 1985.
