Reader's view: Liberal politics not an assault on religion

Frances Perkins, labor secretary for President Franklin Roosevelt, was a fierce advocate for Social Security and the New Deal. Did those programs entitle people to benefits they hadn’t earned? Perkins would maintain she hadn’t “paid for” the parents who raised her or “earned” each life- sustaining breath. No, these were unearned gifts from God through grace, not merit.
