Local view: Businesses need to get online to prosper

The son of a small-business owner in Northfield, Minn., I grew up working for my dad’s landscaping company, Grove Landscaping. When my dad first started his business, he had only a pickup truck, a wheelbarrow and a shovel. His marketing approach was all shoe leather. He walked the streets of our neighborhood, knocking on doors and letting people know he was open for business. Hard work, integrity and word-of-mouth advertising was how you built your business back then.
