What gypsy moth caterpillars like to eat, and what they avoid

Gypsy moth caterpillars have been known to eat 500 different species of plants and trees, but they have some favorites like oak, birch and aspen. Oaks can be especially hit hard, and often perish if defoliated by gypsy moths for two consecutive summers.
