Flexibility is an important part of strength training

Published 02/07/2011, Worthington Daily Globe

WORTHINGTON — Most of us stretch our muscles because they are tight and we think they will become more flexible and it will prevent injuries. Stretching is meant to prepare the muscle for exercise and not to create injury during the course of it. Contrary to popular belief, stretching before a workout does not appear to decrease the occurrence of injury. The risk of injury seems to be about equal for those who stretch and those who do not stretch before exercise. The warm-up, not stretching, is more of an important deterrent for injury, when performed before an exercise bout.
