Otter Tail County commissioners adopt the Social Host Ordinance

Published 05/08/2012, Wadena Pioneer Journal

Otter Tail County Board of Commissioners adopted the Social Host Ordinance at the May 1 board meeting. The Board intends to discourage underage possession and consumption of alcohol, even if done within the confines of a private residence and intends to hold persons criminally responsible. The ordinance makes it unlawful to provide an environment where underage drinking takes place, regardless of who provides the alcohol. It applies when the person knows or reasonably should know an underage person will consume alcoholic beverages. Parents cannot be charged, if in their presence, they allow their underage child to consume alcohol in their residence. Allowing someone else’s child to do so would be a violation of the ordinance.
