Wild Side: Smart use of floodplains

Smartweeds (Polygonum family) are native plants adapted to an amphibious life. There are about 15 species of smartweeds growing in our region in floodplains, shallow marshes, disturbed areas and farm fields. They have a remarkable ability to continue to grow when flooded and to flourish after the water recedes.
