Panther Post: Wordsmiths

Nineteen students participated in the Century Middle School Spelling Bee on Jan. 16, sponsored by the school's PTA. The oral bee included the top spellers in grades 5 through 8, and follows the Scripps National Spelling Bee format. Spencer Hausmann was the first place winner after a long battle lasting 16 rounds. The championship word was "timorously.” Other challenging words included "scythe,” "mezzanine,” "whimsical,” "leniency,” "extemporaneous" and "posthumous." First place winner Spencer Hausmann will advance to the Regional Spelling Bee in Thief River Falls on Feb. 15.
