Century kindergartners celebrate Green for Life Day

Published 09/18/2010, Park Rapids Enterprise

A tree took root in the Century kindergartners’ “arboretum” as did an understanding of the evergreens’ role in the environment when Teresa Ohm of Flying W Gardens and Bert Swanson, president of the Minnesota Nursery and Landscape Association, arrived on campus Thursday. Century was one of 70 schools throughout the state to take part in the first Green for Life Day, as proclaimed by Gov. Tim Pawlenty. The children learned trees take pollutants from the atmosphere, give us food, paper and wood for houses. “And we couldn’t breathe if it wasn’t for trees,” Swanson reminded them. The kids compared their height with the trees, learning humans grow faster, but trees will exceed them in the long run.
