Officials say Verizon-Alltel deal means N.D. monopoly

Verizon Wireless’ proposed acquisition of Alltel Corp. would create a virtual cell phone monopoly in North Dakota, and regulators should take steps to safeguard against that, state officials say. North Dakota customers have almost 428,000 cell phones, and Verizon and Alltel serve the vast majority of them, Public Service Commissioner Tony Clark said. Should the deal be consummated, Verizon may be required to sell some of its new North Dakota holdings, Clark said.
