Too warm for waterfowl opener

It is unseasonably warm, even in the first hour of legal shooting light on this first day of October. A freight train rattles its way across the Gallatin Valley half a mile to the north, and vehicles on the interstate highway create unending traffic noise. But it is opening day of the waterfowl season, and thanks to an invitation from my old friend, John Thorp, I am out hunting and not sitting in the house.
