Other views: Close call reveals need for courthouse security

Published 02/18/2011, The Jamestown Sun

A recent incident in Hettinger in which a man pulled a gun in a courtroom is an extreme case, for sure, but it should still be further proof that courthouse security must be taken seriously. In Hettinger, Vicente Chacano pulled a 9-mm handgun after a jury convicted him of two sex-related charges. Chacano pointed the gun in several directions and appeared to try to fire the weapon, although no shots were fired. Initial reports were unclear whether the gun’s safety was on or the weapon simply didn’t fire. Reports also indicated that Chacano had two additional full ammunition clips in his pocket.
