Other views: Now is not the time to change the oil tax

A privately funded campaign to lower North Dakota’s oil taxes is stimulating a good discussion but has not made a convincing case that taxes should be lowered now. Former Gov. Ed Schafer has been hired for his star power. Highly respected for his service as governor and U.S. secretary of agriculture, Schafer has argued in stops across the state that the time to lower the tax is now in order to keep oil production up when oil drilling and pumping in the rich Bakken Formation in western North Dakota becomes more difficult and expensive.
