Diane Ruhland letter: 'Tread for a cure' was a huge success

Wow, is all I could say after I heard the total of my first fund-raiser as Women's Way coordinator for Fargo Cass Public Health.

I would like to take this opportunity to say thank you to every one who made our "Tread for A Cure" on Oct. 18 such a huge success. The 24-hour treadmill marathon raised more than $4,900 for the "Women to Women Mammography Fund." This fund enables uninsured, income-eligible women in our area under age 50 to receive a mammogram at no charge. It provides these women with mammograms who otherwise would go without this lifesaving screening. This is an important way for our community to help in decreasing the breast cancer morbidity and mortality rate by providing early detection through screening mammograms.

A special thanks to Lady Wellness for their hard work and for hosting the second annual event. Also Barb Scharnberg at Lady Wellness who went above and beyond in planning and facilitating the fund-raiser. It was my pleasure to meet Ann Phibian, Sandy Buttweiler and Stacey Deffenbaugh at the fund-raiser and I would like to thank them and their respective stations for their support and coverage of the fund-raiser.

Thank you to the local businesses who donated gift certificates or gifts to be used as door prizes for the fund-raiser participants. Thanks to Lady Wellness also for their donating memberships and training sessions as incentives for participants.

My only wish is that, if Lady Wellness is willing to hold a third fund-raiser next year, we could get more of the community involved in the event. So watch for this fund-raiser next year in October, which is breast cancer awareness month, and help to make it a record even for all of us.
