West Fargo girls take team title at East Region track meet

GRAND FORKS – Ashley Rone proved herself to be the fastest runner in East Region girls track. Her big regret is that she wasn’t able to do it against a healthy Amanda Levin.

Grand Forks Red River’s Rone was the lone individual triple winner Saturday at the North Dakota Class A East Region girls meet at Cushman Field. The junior won the 100, 200 and 400.

West Fargo’s Levin was defending champion in all three races in the region, as well as the state meet. But the senior suffered a serious knee injury early in volleyball last fall, missing the basketball and volleyball seasons.

Levin is running, but she hasn’t reached her times of a year ago.

“I would rather have seen her running at full strength,” Rone said. “It would have pushed me more.

“I think my times would have been better. PRs (personal records) are more important to me than winning something. And competing against good runners like her makes you better.”

Levin and Rone were in side-by-side lanes in all three races. Levin finished second in the 400, third in the 200 and fourth in the 100.

Failing to three-peat “is kind of hard,” Levin said. “You want to be as good as you were. But it is what it is.

“This has made me work harder. (The injury) is one of the biggest obstacles I’ve ever had to overcome. I can’t say I’m disappointed. A lot of people thought I might not be running at all this year. It’s pretty cool to prove them wrong. I’m happy to just be running again.”

So is Rone. “Her being defending champion and running next to me, the adrenaline kicked in. That pushed me harder,” said Rone, who had winning times of 12.60 seconds in the 100, 25.55 seconds in the 200 and 57.53 seconds in the 400.

Levin helped West Fargo win the team race. The Packers repeated with 184 points, followed by Fargo Davies (133) and Red River (126).

In the boys division, Davies won with 167 points, followed by West Fargo (113.5) and Red River (112).

For Davies, the region title was a first for the boys track team.

“We had a really good day,” Eagles coach Paul Lean said. “We have championship banners on the wall in our gym. We didn’t have one for EDC track yet. The kids were really focused on this.”

Nick Scarberry (100, 200) and Marcus Welk (400, pole vault) were double open winners for Davies. Scarberry set a meet record in the 200 with his 22.06-second time.

Other double winners in the boys division were West Fargo’s Daniel Asa (110 hurdles, 300 hurdles) and Grand Forks Central’s Camron Roehl (1,600, 3,200).

The West Fargo girls were led by Keely Walker, who won the shot put and discus.

“Amanda isn’t 100 percent,” Packers coach Darin McKinnon said. “But we’ve had a lot of other girls step up. We won with depth. We had a nice balance. When you can score in almost every event, that really helps.”

Other double winners in the girls field were Red River’s Hannah Arason (high jump, javelin) and Central’s Karly Ackley (1,600, 3,200).
