Weather Talk: We have a right to be upset about the cold weather

Are you feeling angry about the cold weather? You have a right to be upset. Going back to Dec. 5, when the winter suddenly turned cold, the number of colder-than- average days exceeds the number of warmer-than- average days by more than double.

Over the past 149 days, there have been 105 days with temperatures colder than average, two days exactly average, and 42 warmer-than-average days. Our weather has been consistently colder than average for five months in a row. To be fair to the weather gods, there have been 42 warmer-than-average days in this stretch. And the winter snowpack did actually melt quickly during one of those warm spells in March. And it was nice on Easter. But other than that, it’s been five months of dang cold weather in a place known for its cold.

Medium-range weather models are all basically suggesting a continuation of the generally below-average-temperature pattern through the middle of May. Fortunately, because average is warmer in mid-May, below average should at least be warmer than the past couple of weeks have been.
