Oakes school locked down due to ‘security risk’

OAKES, N.D. – Oakes Public School was locked down for more than an hour Wednesday after a person considered a “security risk” walked within a block of the school, Oakes Police Chief Mark Roberts said.

Roberts said Dale Smith Jr., 38, of Oakes, was seen around 10:15 a.m. Wednesday near the school in Dickey County in southeastern North Dakota. A warrant was out for Smith’s arrest for allegedly violating conditions of a bond from a previous charge. Roberts said Smith had been accused of making threats against the school in the past.

“The lockdown was a strictly cautionary measure taken by the school,” Roberts said.

The school was locked down from around 10:20 to 11:30 a.m.

Roberts said Smith was arrested on the warrant and was lodged in the Barnes County Correctional Facility.
