#FMGram: Punchgut shares gallery, alley art online

FARGO – The works of Punchgut often look like they’d be more at home in an alley than a gallery.

While the Fargo artist has a piece in the alley between the 300 block of Broadway and Roberts Street (a dumpster with a pair of comic hands dangling out the side – how “Fargo” of him!), he’s also had exhibits in the Plains and Rourke Art museums.

His graffiti, pop and poster art-influenced style, as well as his handle (real name Matt Mastrud), have made him a popular, if mysterious figure in the local art scene and a favorite stop on the annual fall Studio Crawl, though he’s skipping this year to work on a show in Grand Forks.

When he’s not showing in galleries, he’s created an Instagram page, @punchgut, to showcase his work and the process.

Fittingly, his only description on the page is a street-smart disclaimer: “Artist. Not the fancy ARteest kind either. Just the regular unleaded type artist.”
