Fargo Davies earns first EDC girls soccer victory of the season
First home match of the season. Check. First Eastern Dakota Conference victory of the season. Check.
The Eagles defeated the Packers 5-2 at Fargo Davies High School.
“I know that our first match was a little tough, because it was our first time getting out there and we had to get used to being a new team,” said senior forward Kenzie Carlson, referencing the 2-1 loss to Fargo Shanley on April 10. “Through (last) Friday and onto the game (Thursday) we played 100 percent better. We played as a team and made our passes. It was a total team effort.”
Carlson scored two goals and added two assists for the Eagles (3-1-0, 1-1-0 EDC).
Junior forward Reiley Klose opened the match scoring on a breakaway opportunity in the ninth minute. Klose finished with two goals.
“Defensively we kept the ball in the midfield as much as we could,” Davies head coach Nick Christianson said. “We did a great job moving the ball and passing with our midfield. Up top, when you have people who are natural goal scorers, obviously life is a little easier.”
Carlson and Klose have combined for 10 goals this season through four matches, which at least in the early going, puts to rest any thoughts that Davies’ offense would be less potent with the graduation of all-state players Emily Wendorff and Paige McCullough.
“We lost a couple goal scorers from last year and we need people to step up into those positions,” Christianson said. “I think they are taking that responsibility.”
“We have a real strong offensive team,” Carlson added. “All of us girls work together to put goals into the net.”
Davies led 3-0 at the half, giving it the advantage needed to hand the Packers their first loss of the season.
“We came out a little nervous and scared,” West Fargo head coach James Moe said. “We know Fargo Davies is a good team, and I think we came out with a defensive mindset to start the game and that isn’t who we are. We needed to be attacking early on.”
The Packers opened the second-half scoring getting a goal from sophomore midfielder Erica Lee. Senior midfielder Alexandra Dub also scored a goal for the Packers (3-1-0, 1-1-0 EDC).
Junior forward Tori Helland added a goal for the Eagles.
“Coming into this one we knew every match in the EDC was going to be tough,” Christianson said. “We just have to keep focused on the end game and take it one game at a time.”
