Trucks crash on icy I-94 near Barnesville, one driver killed
The crash happened about 4 a.m. in the eastbound lanes as one semi was trying to pass the other, the patrol said.
The semi that was being passed lost control and crashed into the other rig, sending it off the road toward the median where it hit a guardrail and a pillar of the bridge that carries Minnesota Highway 34 over the interstate, the patrol said.
Patrol Sgt. Jesse Grabow said the driver of the semi that was struck died at the scene. He was identified as Steven J. Olson, 43, of Moorhead.
The other driver, Thomas P. Harrington Jr., 53, of North St. Paul, was not hurt, Grabow said. The crash remains under investigation.
An overnight snowfall made roads slick in spots Wednesday morning. The patrol dealt with several vehicles that went off the road in west-central Minnesota, including a couple of jackknifed semis, Grabow said.
