Neighbors: Penmanship of man who headed Dakota Business College continues to impress

The penmanship of F. Leland Watkins continues to impress his students after all these years.

Neighbors has carried several stories about the old Dakota Business College in Fargo and of Leland, who headed the school for many years.

Herb Kappel, Fargo, sends along a copy of the envelope in which Leland sent a letter to him in 1974.

“I and my wife attended DBC in 1946-’47,” Herb writes. “We have good memories of Mr. Watkins and his school.

“He stressed penmanship as a cornerstone of communication.”

And here, thanks to Herb, you see an example of Leland’s own superb penmanship.

Buckskin Harry

On another matter, former local radio and TV stars often come up in this column. In relation to them, how many of you remember Buckskin Harry?

Rick Stern, Fargo, does, reminding Neighbors of this cowboy who was on WDAY radio and TV in the 1950s and 1960s.

“He would travel around with his horse Crystal Pal to events and birthday parties,” Rick writes. “He also worked with trained dogs and did rope tricks.”

What are your memories of Buckskin Harry, neighbors?
