Heitkamp staffer reportedly assaulted by homeless womanBISMARCK – A homeless woman allegedly assaulted a member of U.S. Sen. Heidi Heitkamp’s staff Thursday at a government building in downtown Bismarck, police said.
The female staffer, who had been working with the woman on an ongoing problem she had, was not injured, police stated in a news release.
Officers responded at 1:22 p.m. to the William L. Guy Federal Building.
The 62-year-old homeless woman, who has been staying at a Bismarck motel, was meeting with the staffer in the hallway when the woman became upset and grabbed the staffer by the shoulders, shook her and took swings at her, police said.
A bystander intervened and informed U.S. Marshals Service employees, who escorted the woman out of the building and turned her over to police.
Police didn’t arrest the woman because they didn’t witness the alleged assault. A report will be forwarded to the city attorney for possible charges of disorderly conduct and simple assault, and to the U.S. attorney and Burleigh County state’s attorney for possible charges, the release stated.
In an emailed statement, Heitkamp thanked law enforcement officers for their quick response.
