Metro high school softball preview capsules

Coach: Ron and Tyler Drechsel (9th year)

Last season: 20-3 (Heart O’ Lakes Conference champions)

Who’s gone: Makenzie Dukleth, P; Brooke Honke, OF; Kelly Bergee, IF.

Key returners: Abby Zutz, Sr., 1B; Kelly Oberg, Sr., 1B; Maddie Johnson, Sr., C; Kayla Feigum, Jr., OF; Sydney Honek, Jr., P; Megan Castor, Jr., SS; Nicole Schmitt, Jr., 3B; Kassidy Bergee, Jr., OF; Keasha Molstre, So., OF; Erika Pake, So., 1B; Lexie Stebleton, Fr., C; Megan Meyers, Fr., 2B; Natalie Steiken, 8th, SS/OF/P.

Coach’s comments: “We will have a mixture of experience and youth,” Ron Drechsel said. “We have 13 returning letter winners, and we are still young. We expect to have healthy competition for playing time. We need the younger players to really push the older kids, which, by the end of the year, should make everyone better. This group of kids enjoys the game of high school softball. They realize it’s a game, and it should be fun. But they also are aware that fun comes from playing well, and that is a focus for them. From that aspect, it should be an exciting year.”

Coach: Stacey Holm (1st year)

Last season: 4-12

Who’s gone: Amanda Horn, 3B; Jordyn McBain, 3B/1B; Taylor Rasmussen, C; Mikaela Trowbridge, OF.

Key returners: KyLee Bartholomay, Jr., P/OF; Jessie Jensen, Sr., 1B; Jessica Larson, Jr., P; Jocelyn Nelson, Sr., OF; Brenna Vanyo, Sr., SS; Sadie Ness, Sr., C.

Coach’s comments: “I’m looking for consistency on the field, good attitude and to obviously improve on where they were last year. I want to take this program and turn it into a successful one. I’m huge on fundamentals.”

Fargo Davies

Coach: Dave Marquardt (3rd season)

Last year’s record: 6-11,

4-12 Eastern Dakota Conference (sixth place at state tournament)

Who’s gone: Hayli Bauer, SS

Key returners: Carla Binde, Soph., P/3B; Shelby Malmanger, Jr., C; Morgan Smith, Soph., OF; Kiana Gilbruith, eighth grade, INF/OF; Jamie Nelson, Fr., INF

Coach’s comments: “We are returning eight starters from last year’s team, which will be a great strength. Having our pitcher and catcher back will hopefully equal success for us. Our young team gained a lot of experience last year with our run in the East Region tournament to make state in just our second year as a program. We need to produce more runs this spring, and I’m confident that we will.”

Fargo North

Coach: Aaron Kliniske (3rd season)

Last year’s record: 12-9,

12-2 EDC (seventh place at state tournament)

Key returners: Anna Mellick, Sr., C/OF; Keely Spiess, Sr., 2B; Morgan Olson, Jr., 3B; Aundra Carter, Jr., SS

Coach’s comments: “This group has shown hard work and dedication early on this spring. If our pitchers stay around the plate and we don’t throw the ball around, we should give everyone a good game this spring.”

Fargo Shanley-Fargo Oak Grove-Park Christian

Coach: Chad Slyter (1st year)

Last year’s record: 6-5, 10-6 EDC

Who’s gone: Mackenzie McCormick, OF; Maddie Little, OF; Madison Smith, 1B; Tristin Webber, 2B.

Coach’s comments: “We return a lot of starters and varsity members from last year’s young team, but overall we are still a young team, with only two seniors that return with varsity experience. The key for the season will be for the team to continue to learn and progress.”

Fargo South

Coach: Jessica Winter (2nd season)

Last year’s record: 1-6, 2-12 EDC

Who’s gone: Josette Lepine, 3B; Elizabeth Bresson, 1B; Katelyn Krabbenhoft, DP; Toni Froysland, OF

Key returners: Emily Grothmann, Jr., C/SS; Sydney Shiek, Jr., P; Kristina Kalk, Jr., P/2B; Tiffany Barth, Jr., OF; Heidi Stiening, Jr., 1B; Ashley Honl, Jr., C/OF.

Coach’s comments: “We have several returning players that continue to get better each year. With no seniors on the team this year, we’ll be a young squad with a lot of potential. We picked up our defense a lot last year. We have been working non-stop on our offense, and I think we’ll see improvement at the plate this spring.”

West Fargo

Coach: Pat Johnson (21st year)

Last year’s record: 25-2,

16-0 (Class A state champions, East Region champions)

Coach’s comments: “We haven’t had a lot of time outside yet this spring, so it has been tough to evaluate what we have. We have youth on the team, so our returners will need to help the new players along and hopefully we continue on.”
