Metro high school baseball preview capsules

Coach: Bill Ibach (6th year)

Last season: 11-5 (Heart O’ Lakes Conference champions)

Who’s gone: Isaiah Greene (two-time HOL most valuable player, two-time all-section); Tanner Karger (moved to Frazee).

Key returners: Chad Johnson, Sr., SS (HOL all-conference); Tanner McManus, Sr., 2B (HOL all-conference); Zach Nelson, Sr., P/OF (injured in 2013); Tyler Madson, Jr., P/OF (HOL pitcher of the year); Brock Stalboerger, Sr., OF (three-year varsity player); Wyatt Bolin, Sr., 1B/P (three-year varsity player).

Coach’s comments: “We have an experienced varsity group this year. Several of these guys have been playing varsity the past two seasons. All three of our juniors saw significant varsity time last year and two of our sophomores have been playing varsity since 8th grade. We only graduated one senior last year (Isaiah Greene), but he was a dominant pitcher and a great hitter. Tanner Karger’s family moved to Frazee this year. That’s another big bat lost as he was our clean-up hitter. We will miss both of these guys a lot. We are looking to take the next step this year and get deep into the tournament. If we get to the final four, I think we have as good a chance as anyone to advance.”

Coach: Greg Salvevold (9th year)

Last season: 12-12

Who’s gone: Michael Weismann, 1B/P; Peter MacFarlane, C/OF; Brandon Porter, OF; Eric Barker, OF; Tanner Swenson, 1B; Derek Jorgenson, P.

Key returners: Zach Schroeder, Sr., 3B (led team with .346 batting average last season); Preston Kraiter, Sr., SS; Drew Anderson, Sr., 1B; Tyler Eidsness, Sr., 2B/P; Austin Skjefte, Sr., C; Jason England, Sr., 2B/P; Jared Benson, Sr., OF.

Coach’s comments: “The younger guys coming in are going to be fun to watch. The biggest thing coming in is getting our pitchers ready and just logging some innings to get themselves ready for the end of the year. Hitting-wise we have pretty good guys returning who hit the ball for us last year.”

Fargo Davies

Coach: Hans Anderson (4th year)

Last year’s record: 15-10, 6-3 Eastern Dakota Conference

Who’s gone: Gunnar Linstaedt, P/1B; Bryton Buth, P/1B; Brock Horner, P/C/INF; Ryan Smith, P/SS; Casey Quinlan, P/OF; Andrew Beyer, OF; Cayden Barta, P/OF; Eric Peterson, P/OF

Key returners: Aidan Hartness, Jr., C; Tristan Hartness, Jr., INF/P; Kaden Steiner, Jr., INF/P; Andrew Lein, Sr., 1B/P.

Coach’s comments: “We have some good young talent on the team this spring, but they are inexperienced group. It will be fun to see what they can do at the varsity level. … We graduated nine seniors from our team last year, but I think we will do fine. It will be just a matter of each player getting reps in. The kids are eager to prove themselves.”

Fargo North

Coach: Jeff Fiechtner (17th year)

Last year’s record: 15-9, 6-3 EDC

Who’s gone: Isaac Rerick, P/OF; Max Teschendorf, C/OF; Seth Tollefson, INF; Andrew Grieve, P; Brandon Smith, P/INF, Matt Connelly, P/3B, Casey Thompson, P/DH, Grant Fiske, 1B.

Key returners: Willie Roman, Jr., P/INF; Mike Boutain, Jr., P/INF; Dave Melhoff, Jr., C; Carter Thompson, Jr., P/OF; Tyler Anderson, Jr., P/IF; Seth Brenneman, Sr., DH/INF; Steve Rider, Sr., P/OF; Seth Amundson, Sr., SS; Ian Schultz, Sr., P/OF; Charlie Cardwell, Sr., P

Coach’s comments: “Our strengths will be pitching depth and the fact that we return nine players who saw a lot of varsity playing time last year. For us to have a good season our group needs to understand what it takes to be successful as a team. We have a lot of unproven potential and each one of them will be given an opportunity to show what they can do.”

Fargo South

Coach: Donn Bryant (12th year)

Last year’s record: 5-15, 2-7 EDC

Who’s gone: Aaron Green, P/OF; Stephen Howlett, P/INF; Zach Wixo, INF/OF/P; Joe Brunner, C.

Key returners: Andrew Penney, Sr., C; Dallas Raftevold, Sr., INF/P; Chris Prisinzano, Sr., INF/P; Alex DuBord, Jr., P/INF; Dylan Raftevold, Sr., INF; Ryan Green, Sr., P/OF; Andrew Blumer, Sr., P.

Coach’s comments: “Our strength is our experience. A lot of the guys have been playing on the team since their sophomore year so they know what is expected of them. We need to get our bats going and our lineup will be something we’ll work at adjusting early on in the season.”

Fargo Shanley-Fargo Oak Grove-Park Christian

Coach: Luke Rustad (1st year)

Last year’s record: 10-12, 3-6 EDC (Class A state champions)

Who’s gone: Lincoln Voss, P/3B; Brad Conant, 1B/P; Alex Widmer, C

Key returners: Jake Salentine, Sr., P/SS; Gabe Sandy, Sr., P/2B; Peter Simon, Sr., OF; Jake Erholtz, Jr., OF/P; Tom George, Sr., P/INF; Nels Eide, Jr., C

Coach’s comments: “We have a lot of returning talent that has seen a lot of playing time over the last several seasons,” Rustad said. “As a team, we started playing well at the end of the season a year ago and for that to carry over we can’t afford to give the team’s we play freebies. Walks and errors are magnified in close games. As an experienced team, we shouldn’t give many of those up.”

West Fargo

Coach: Brett Peterson (11th year)

Last year’s record: 22-4, 9-0 EDC (East Region tournament champions)

Who’s gone: Kory Wolden, OF/P; Camran Bonnema, P/OF; Ben Huber, INF; Matt Barclay, OF/P; Luke Johnson, INF; Ben Bruenjes, C.

Key returners: Devin Wageman, Sr., OF/P; Chase Gooding, Jr., 3B/P; Noah Paper, Sr., INF/P; Dan Benson, Sr., OF; Marcus Wohl, Jr., C

Coach’s comments: “Our pitching should be deep. We are not completely starting over and we should have eight guys who can give us some innings. I’m not sure if we have that front-line starter yet, but I feel that we have two or three guys that could emerge in that role for us as the season goes along. … We will be a solid defensive team and if there is a question mark with this team heading into the season it will be scoring runs.”
